“Until We See Eachother Again”

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.  But the greatest of these is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13 NIV

This is my last devotional for La Junta UMC.  I can’t believe that is even possible.

I wasn’t sure what I was going to write because over the last few years every week I have talked about just about everything-likely some things more than once (sorry about that!).

Jenna often teased me that I essentially created two sermons each week and made more work for myself.  I always saw these weekly devotionals as yet another way to talk with you; to share with you a piece of who I am, where I came from and what I believe.

This week Jenna and I are very busy with packing and doing all those last-minute things that need to be done during a transition.  Our move date is set for next Wednesday and then Pastor Lynne and her family will be working in the parsonage next weekend and moving in on the following Monday.

It’s a bit surreal to us as we prepare to move.

Many of you were very kind to us and treated us so well.

I have so many amazing memories from the last few years.

I remember fondly our block party where we met a little girl named Danika who would begin coming every Sunday to church-even dragging her family along with her from time to time.

I smile when I remember serving college students pancakes, sausages, waffles, and of course nachos. I remember when the girls’ basketball sang to all of us as a thank you.

I remember fondly our church in the parks, baptisms, candlelight Christmas Eve services, serving our veterans and first responders’ breakfast early on Saturday mornings. I remember seeing you all on Sunday mornings!

I especially remember all the saints who were called home to be with Jesus.  I miss each of them so much.

I am excited for Pastor Lynne to love you as much as we have and for you to love her as much as you’ve loved me and my family.

She and I have had many conversations and her hopes and dreams for this church are not unlike the direction we have been travelling the last few years.  You all will so deeply appreciate her gifts and graces and her passion for making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

When I moved from Maine to Colorado, I was feeling homesick and I remember driving through Denver and saw a huge billboard-no doubt erected just for me, for that moment.  The billboard was an old Irish pub chant that simply said in large words: “Here’s to the hellos, the goodbyes, and all the friends made in between.”  I remember that I started crying during that God moment.

It has been an absolute honor and privilege leading LJUMC the past few years.  Each of you will forever be in our hearts. We are excited for the next chapter in our lives and very excited for the next chapter in LJUMC”s life!  I can’t wait to read about the amazing things that are happening here!

The only thing I might add to that Irish pub chant is that there really are no goodbyes, rather only; until we see each other again.

Team, until we see each other again!

Blessings,

Rev. Lou Ward
