Companions of the Wise

Walk with the wise and become wise,
for a companion of fools suffers harm.

                         (Proverbs 13:20, NIV)

There is an African proverb that says “One who relates with a corrupt person likewise gets corrupted.”

That is another way of saying this: if you show me your friends, I will show you, well… you.

We are influenced by the people we surround ourselves with.  If we surround ourselves with negative people, we will likely become more negative. If we surround ourselves with active people, we will likely find ourselves also becoming more active.  Join a running club to meet new people and it shouldn’t be a surprise that you will in fact be running more.

Likewise, when we surround ourselves with wise people, we learn from them invaluable life lessons.  If you have ever had a quality mentor, you know exactly what I am talking about.

One of the gifts of being the body of Christ is we are invited to walk alongside a diverse group of men and women (and children) who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and savior.

We all come together during the week and on Sunday mornings to read from the same book, sing many of the same songs, and worship God together in Churches all across the world.

The secret sauce of life is to surround yourself with people who lift you up and support you.  Too often we cling to nostalgia and let the wrong people dictate our happiness, contentment, and even our faith lives.

Our scripture reading today is imbuing us with some common sense.  If we surround ourselves with wise and thoughtful people it will rub off on us in important ways.

If you barely have enough money to pay your rent and bills and have a friend who is telling you that perhaps you shouldn’t take a trip to Vegas, they not only care about you but your future financial well-being.  They don’t want you to have to suffer the consequences of not being able to pay your rent and possibly get evicted.  Perhaps they’ve made foolish decisions and don’t want you to do the same.  They care deeply about you so they share.

However, if you have a friend that knows you don’t have enough money to pay your rent or bills and is telling you that you only live once so you might as well go to Vegas anyway, do they really care about you and your well-being? “Worry about your rent and bills later,” they might say.  They aren’t being wise friends, are they?  They might not actually be friends at all.  They could just be using you.

I hope you have surrounded yourself with wise council and people who are looking out for your best interests and needs.  As our scripture reminds us, it’s you and I who suffer when we surround ourselves with people who don’t truly care.  We grow and prosper when we surround ourselves with people who truly care about us and our needs and wants.

I pray this week that you lean into those people who provide you with invaluable wisdom and also remember those wise saints in your life who have gone home to be with the Lord.  Give thanks for them and if possible, tell them thanks.  They care about you and for you, in ways you likely don’t fully understand.

May it be so,

Rev. Lou Ward
