Proverbs 21:21 (NIV)
“Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity, and honor.”
Have you ever noticed doing good often leads to good and that what we pursue often becomes what we attract?
Pursuing righteousness and love all the time can be quite a challenge, especially when we have a history of mistakes, challenges, and problems.
And sometimes how we define life, prosperity, and honor can be problematic as well.
Life can mean sickness.
Life can mean losing loved ones to death.
Prosperity doesn’t necessarily mean gaining wealth.
Prosperity can mean losing everything in order to gain everything.
In a world of instant gratification, we can be easily disappointed in how our pursuits of godliness doesn’t always equate with noticeable returns. However, one of the immediate challenges is that righteousness and love, more often than not, benefits those we engage rather than ourselves.
The fruit of our labor becomes us being a blessing to others through our faith, our positive attitudes (in a negative world), our love towards the least of these, and the marginalized.
Our scripture today is an important reminder that love and faith begets more love and faithfulness – both from ourselves internally and also those we engage with.
I used to train customer service and I would always tell the new agents to answer the phone with a smile. To demonstrate the importance, I would have them try to say, while smiling as large as they could, “I hate you”. Try it. It’s really hard to do with a large smile – almost impossible.
May you be moved to pursue righteousness and love always with all that you do and all that you engage with in this community. You will find life, prosperity, and honor.
Pray: God, move in me a spirit to pursue love and righteousness. Help me be the change I wish to see in this world. Stir in me new love and new righteousness towards all that I see in this world.
Read: Each day read Galatians 2:20.
Yourself: Do one thing each day that is only for you. A walk. A special dessert. A quiet place to listen to music. Watch the sunrise or the sunset. Each day this week, you do something that is just for you.
May it be so,
Rev. Lou Ward
