A Generous God

James 1:5 (ESV)

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

This past week I was reflecting on high school teachers who have had a big impact on who I’ve become.  Teachers who saw in me potential that I had not yet seen.  Several teachers prodded me to be challenged, explore new interests, and definitions of success.

I have had several mentors in business and in ministry who have also provided me with immeasurable wisdom over the years-also helping me to become who I am today.

Our scripture reading today reminds us that God is a generous God.

God is generous because not only will God give us the wisdom we need due to lacking; God will not treat us any less loving because of it.  In other words, God accepts us just as we are.

I have also had terrible teachers and terrible bosses.   I had one boss in Fort Collins, when I worked for a life insurance company, that constantly belittled me whenever I asked for help.  She would be insulted, on my behalf, that I didn’t know how to do something.  I dreaded asking her for help and would often fumble through on task that should have been quick trying to avoid having to engage with her.  I am sure you all have had coworkers, bosses, and people in your life like this.

Thankfully, we have a God that never treats us like that.   Our scripture tells us that we need only ask God for guidance and wisdom and it will be provided.  No strings attached.  No barrage of insults or condemnation- just wisdom, love, and generosity.

I am not sure if you are in a season where you need to seek out God for wisdom in your life with a struggle that you have.  Maybe you have been trying to achieve success all on your own-spinning your wheels.  Maybe you are depleting all your energy trying to solve a problem or problems that need to be turned over to God to lead you with divine wisdom?

I pray that the scripture reading today speaks to you new trust in God, a new desire to seek out God for wisdom and guidance this week, and understand how gentle and loving God is when coming to our shortcomings and lack of wisdom.  It is like God is the adult and we are the two-year-old.  We can’t do all things on our own and must turn to God often and without hesitation.  Please know that God is patiently waiting for you to come to God in all things-big and small.

Pray:  Gracious Lord, please stir in us new trust and new hope that you will patiently provide us wisdom to address all our struggles, fears, and dreams.  Guide us, heavenly Father, in all things with love, grace, and mercy.

Act:  Look towards your family and friends and listen to them when they ask you a question.  What is behind the question?  Are they really looking for wisdom and guidance?  Listen in new ways this week-listen with kindness and respond with love.

Yourself: Eat one piece of Dark Chocolate every couple of days this week.  Studies have shown it boosts brain power and a variety of tasks are improved by this super food.  Plus it tastes so good…

May it be so,
