Matthew 6: 3-4
“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Jesus challenges us throughout his time on earth.
In our Scripture Reading today, Jesus is simply telling us to care for each other without any expectation for recognition in doing so.
How will anyone know that you are doing what you are supposed to? How will other Christians see you doing what you say you are doing?
Jesus says, they won’t. But God will.
It all boils down to who we are trying to impress – each other or God?
Again, who do we expect to judge us – each other or God?
Just after these verses, Jesus continues to say we mustn’t just pray to be seen praying. In doing so, Jesus tells us that that defeats the purpose of truly trying to have a relationship with God.
We can pray in public but we must be sure it is genuine.
Likewise, you can give in public but again, make sure it is genuine. Make sure it is coming from a place of sincerity and not just for the sake of being seen by others as generous or righteous.
As a church we balance this missional imperative with letting people know what we are doing. Although I often post what we are doing on Facebook and our social media, it is never to “show” that we are being the church. It is to help us see what we are accomplishing as well as others who follow us. I never share our mission work or outreach for validation or approval. I trust that we give and share from a place of love.
Advent is a great season in which to give to the needy. There are numerous local charities and organizations that need your support: your time, energy, and even your finances. We have our Reverse Advent box in the back of our church you can donate to (flyers are in the back of the church if you haven’t picked one up yet as well as on FB), you can help build winter Matthew 25 bags with me next week on Thursday at 11 am downstairs in the fellowship hall. There are countless ways that this Advent you can do things to help the needy and you know what? I bet most of you already are. That’s the amazing thing is that I believe most of you are already doing so much for our community that most of us have no idea! You know what? God does. Those you are helping do as well.
And that…………..that is all that matters.
