John 11: 25 - 26 NIV
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.’ And whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
How about it - Do you believe this?
Our instinct is to say yes. WE absolutely believe in the resurrection. I would agree that most of us absolutely do believe.
Sometimes, however, as the author of John is telling us this morning, we don’t always live that through our actions.
Whenever we ignore a person in need-we are instinctively denying the resurrection.
Whenever we deny love to another person for whatever reason-we are instinctively denying the resurrection.
Whenever we hold on to unforgiveness and anger towards others-we are instinctively denying the resurrection.
The difference becomes in what we say and of course with what we do.
As the case with much of what Christians do in their communities, we sometimes have a gap between what we profess we believe and how we demonstrate that very belief to the communities we serve.
I invite you to think back to those times you have denied others in love, forgiveness, help, caring for the least of these, etc. We’ve all done it-myself included.
How could you have treated those differently? More patience? More understanding? More humility?
Jesus, in our scripture reading today, is asking us to be critical of those times-not beat ourselves up over it-but to learn from our opportunities to serve and love better. Jesus simply asks us, in La Junta in 2018, Do you believe this?
We can’t be Christians and ignore Jesus. It isn’t a viable long-term strategy for making disciples for the transformation of the world. Let us seek out God’s wisdom and guidance daily through prayer, scripture, meditation, fasting, and being in holy community with each other.
May it be so,
Rev. Lou Ward
