“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.”
All of us are bombarded by an incredible amount of information every single day. Red Crow Marketing Inc. estimates that the average American is inundated with between 4,000 and 10,000 ads every single day. This makes sense of course when you take into consideration our trips to the grocery store, our radios and televisions, our social media accounts, and of course all other aspects of everyday life: billboards, mail, magazines, emails etc.
If you’ve been watching the news, the most popular phone released a press conference that they are putting out their newest version for about a thousand dollars. On social media I have already seen people sharing how badly they want it-even though the phone they have is perfectly fine!
Our scripture today reminds us that we mustn’t conform to the fleeting trends of this world and yet the world spends billions of dollars telling us exactly how we should be conformed. Many of us, myself included, eat, drink, choose, and buy based on successful marketing campaigns that are so subtle we probably didn’t even realize it is happening. It’s a difficult cycle to break when most of us aren’t even aware of all the areas marketing is trying to conform us.
But there is Good News. We have the Gospel! We have scripture giving us correct direction.
We have Jesus interceding on our behalf!
If we sit with scripture and spend time listening to God each day in prayer and meditation; we have the ability to get a counter narrative to the one being given to us by mega industries.
Scripture reminds us that there are many things far more important than accumulation of stuff, self-glorification, and self-gratification.
I decided to call our contemporary service on Wednesday evenings ReNew, in a large part off this very scripture, because I believe that we as a church have a sacred responsibility to help provide that counter narrative to our community.
I pray that we are able to attract college students who are currently only getting bombarded with certain types of advertising and have lost sight of both God and the miraculous. I pray that the service provides an alternative story line to the one currently being fed in a way that feels both inviting and unassuming.
Today I invite you to be in prayer of areas that you have seen yourself being conformed to the world rather than the life we are called to in scripture. Have you found yourself tempted by technology, money, fame and prestige, relationships that aren’t healthy or fruitful, etc.?
May it be so,
Rev. Lou Ward
