“For we live by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)
There is an old Kenyan proverb that says “Seeing is different than being told.”
Likewise, I would add, trusting is different than knowing.
There are many things that are real that we will never see directly. We don’t see the thing but rather the result of them.
Things like gravity.
You get the point. I am sure that there are many things that we can’t actually see but we can either experience it, feel it, or be impacted by it.
Our scripture reading today is reminding us that we live by faith and not by sight.
When I was hiking the Appalachian Trail, my favorite hikes were the ones done at night with only the moonlight.
It was a wonderful reminder of how dependent we become on our sense of sight.
We were hiking at one point on an exposed ridge with nothing but the glistening moonlight off the rocks and dirt to guide us.
We were unable to see down the sides of the ridge into the unknown, in fact there were times when we were scrambling up and down hand over hand guiding ourselves when the moon dipped behind a cloud.
We had lost the comfort of our sight and yet had to rely in our other senses. While I don’t remember every step of the 2100-mile hike with as much detail, I remember that night hike vividly.
I can still feel the cool rocks under my hands and the way the gravel would shove up under my fingernails when I grasped too quickly and hard.
I remember the sound of the wind gently blowing below us to the left and the right.
These were things I missed ordinarily when we hiked during the day because my sight took full control.
I pray you are able to lean deeper into faith this week with all of life’s uncertainties. Let Jesus take control of all your “what-ifs” and “how comes”. Let Jesus take care of all the solutions you can’t see.
