Busy Being Busy

Titus 3:14

"Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives."

If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a million times:  I am a doer.  This verse resonates deep into my soul.  I sing from the rooftops when I read this verse. It feels like an affirmation of my mantra, work ethic, and total being.

There is so much suffering in this world and so much to do and well…so little time to do it.

My mom used to tell me that I lived my life with an incredible sense of urgency.  In many ways, this is still very true.   I don’t rest well and I definitely don’t sit still well.  I started talking when I was really little, started walking really young…my nickname growing up was “Mr. Man” because I was in such a hurry to learn how to do everything and ornery as ever while learning doing it.

Maybe it was Yoda that said “Do or do not, there is not try” although I’m not entirely sure Yoda said that but the sentiment is still pretty true.  We can get boggled down with all the peripheral “stuff” when often the issues right in front of us require a more pressing and of course immediate need.  There is so much need in our community.

Our scripture reading today is reminding us that we have to learn to devote ourselves to doing what is good.  Not what makes us happy or feel good or even comfortable.  The author of Titus is reminding us that in order to call ourselves followers of Jesus we need to live and love like Jesus in our actions as much as our words.

As we continue to grow as a church in our income and our attendance, I hope we continue to grow in our giving of our resources such as time, energy, money, and gifts.  As we receive God’s blessings at this church, I pray we continue to exceed our incoming blessings with our output and outpouring into the community and taking care of each other.

We all get one life on this planet.  One life designed by God for the glory of God.  We truly glorify God when we do just as the author of Titus instructs-when we provide for urgent needs and not live unproductive lives.  We glorify God when we use our gifts and graces and our gifts and blessings to be a blessing for other people-a hand up and not a hand out.

I pray that you are finding new ways to be a blessing to other people.  How can you be a blessing today and tomorrow so that you can provide for the urgent needs around you and not live an “unproductive life”?  See ways that God is challenging you this week as an opportunity to serve deeper, love more broadly, and grow closer to God through service.

May it be so,

Rev. Lou Ward
