Rock of Ages

Isaiah 26:4

"Trust in the Lord forever,
for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal."

Some of you may already know this but our youngest, Liam, is obsessed with rocks.

A couple years ago we went to the Santa Express train so the boys could experience the ride, the cookies and hot chocolate and of course meet Santa.

Santa went down the aisle of the train asking the children what they wanted for Christmas and heard a variety of answers: video games, bikes, phones…you name it, he heard it. After each child Santa said about the same thing. "Well, we’ll see if we can make that happen."

As he sat across from Landon and Liam they both stared at him with awe.

Santa asked Landon what he wanted and he said some Lego. He turned his body towards Liam and asked Liam what he wanted. “A bag of rocks”, Liam quickly responded without missing a beat.

“Rocks?” Santa asked looking at Jenna and me.

“Yes, a bag of rocks please”, Liam responded.

Santa leaned in and quietly said “I am confident that you will get that this year.”

Liam smiled so contently and happily.

While our scripture reading today reminds us that God is the unchanging and unwavering rock for all times, I am also reminded by Liam that God is also the beloved rock for all ages as well.

Jesus tells us that blessed are the children. Children have an innocence and naivete that allows them not to be burdened with all the baggage we often come to God with as adults.

How glad are we that God is our rock?

We don’t often think of rocks as anything more than an inconvenience-something to trip over or perhaps stub our toes with.

I moved to Colorado to rock climb. My and my friends’ goal is that our favorite rock climbing places would never change, that we could go back over and over again.

Unlike God though, we saw that wasn’t the case. One of our favorite rock climbing places when I first moved to Colorado was at Horsetooth Reservoir in Fort Collins. It was demolished to make way for new housing because unlike God who is a rock for all ages-it was only a rock until the city decided it needed to be destroyed.

I hope you are finding your trust and hope in God resolved this week. Read through the entire chapter of Isaiah 26 on Trusting in God forever; it’s only 21 verses. I read it many times this weekend as I waited anxiously to be ordained amidst the uncertainty of our denomination. May it also bring you peace and new found trust in our “rock for all ages” as well during whatever uncertainty you are facing or will be facing.

May it be so,
Rev. Lou Ward
