Jesus Seeks Us Out

Matthew 3: 13

“Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.”

It can seem strange that God seeks US out.  That God seeks ME out.

We know who we are and what we’ve done, said, and thought.  We know our darkest fears and deepest hopes.

As I have gone through my fitness journey and sought out videos to inspire me, motivate me, and of course educate me-I have repeatedly run into videos on how to get six pack abs. I would say, in fact, how-to videos on getting six pack abs outnumbers virtually every other fitness video on YouTube 5 to 1.

While a fit physique is an indicator of body fat composition it isn’t necessarily an indicator of your physical fitness.

I watched one video in particular, yes I’ve watched some of them, and the fitness YouTuber started right off the bat saying you don’t need to get a six pack because you already have one.   If you didn’t have fit abs, she continued, you would simply flop over, would be unable to sit up, walk, or do any number of things you do each hour of every day.  She said “everyone has muscular abs-you just can’t always see them.”  Your body fat percentage is really the only thing that dictates whether you see them or not.

I mention this because it is true in our scripture reading today as well.

Each of us were created in the image of God.

Each of us is always being sought out by God-even as we push God away.

Each of us is constantly being called into deeper relationship with God.

God lives inside each and every one of us-and yet- we can’t always feel it or see it because of the shame, the guilt, the hurt, the pain, sickness etc…so much “life” stuff can cover up our goodness and closeness to God.

Just as you need to work out to see those six pack abs-so too we need to “work out” to experience God and feel close to God sometimes.  I’m going to sound like a broken record here but we need to spend more time in scripture, spend more time in prayer and meditation, spend more time in community with each other-including time in worship and communion.  We have “exercises” we can be doing to “see and feel” God in us and at work in our lives.

John wasn’t expecting Jesus to be baptized by HIM.  In fact, John tells Jesus he’s got it backwards and Jesus should be baptizing him.  John didn’t immediately see why the Christ would be seeking HIM out.  We too can fail to see why it is that Jesus is seeking us out.

I pray you experience God in your life and at work in your life-through the joys and the challenges, the sickness and the healthiness, as well as through the hope and the pain.  Jesus seeks us ALL out and amen for that.

May it be so,

Rev. Lou Ward
