The Unchanging Jesus                       Hebrews 13:8 "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."

In less than a month, God willing, I will be celebrating another birthday.

I look back over my life and remember all the “versions” of me from a bratty little toddler who garnered the nickname “Mr. Man” from my family because, well, the name says it all, to who I am today.

While the essence of who I am has undoubtedly gone unchanged, lots of parts of me have died over the decades.  Oh, and thank God for that.  Like the kid who nearly temper –tantrum-ed himself to death when my parents made me cut off my mullet.  Man, I loved that thing…

I’m glad I was able to say goodbye to that bratty teenage kid who was desperately seeking attention from my parents so I rebelled and did such stupid things. Nearly got kicked out of Junior High School before something clicked and I about-faced my attitude and began being an A/B student in High school.

If I had told my high school counselor then that I would be a pastor she would likely have thought for sure I meant something OTHER than a Christian church leader.

I tell you all this because who I am today is in part because of who I was, but also because I am no longer who I was.

We all hopefully grow in our lives, our faith, and in our understanding of who we are and who we can be.

Unlike Jesus who never changes (thank the Lord for that), we grow better and more mature in our faith as we gain new experiences and better understand our relationship with Jesus.

Jesus was and is perfect.  We are not.

Can you think of a time where you have grown and changed for the better?

Perhaps your attitude or perspective has shifted so that you are able to see the world in new and refreshing ways?

The reason we are able to do this is because, as scripture reminds us, Jesus is our always constant unchanging God.

Jesus doesn’t change.  Ecclesiastes 3 tells us that there is a season for everything: even my beloved mullet.  Jesus, however, has no seasons.  “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

I pray this week for those of us in the midst of change, growth, and discernment.  Sometimes growth and change are difficult and feel pretty awkward and even painful at times.  Sometimes, you can’t even see the goodness while going through it, only in looking back.   If you are in the middle of such change or growth, take comfort in the constant nature of who Jesus is and always will be.  Jesus will always be desperately and hopelessly in love with you.  Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is a daily reminder that you are vitally important to Jesus and instrumental in making disciples of Jesus for the transformation of the world.

May you have a truly blessed week and remember always that you are loved and beloved.

May it be so,
Rev. Lou Ward
