Give Thanks

2 Corinthians 4:15

“All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.”

I was asked the other day a powerful question that got me thinking.  It simply asked “What if you woke up today, with only the things you thanked God for yesterday?”

This week is Thanksgiving week.  I hope that it is a time for you to be with friends and family.  A time to reconnect with folks you haven’t seen for a while and to be in community with people you care about.

There’s turkey and all the fixins as well as dessert like pie.

There’s even football on T.V. as well as an all-day James Bond marathon.

It’s a busy day indeed.

I hope though that you take time to be in an attitude of gratitude.

You see we are fast approaching Advent and the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior.

Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas, and New Year’s are all here-this week though is the start of the busy season and it will be over before you know it.

I myself am sitting here typing this saying-how is it Thanksgiving already???  It seems like it was just summer a couple days ago.

In the midst of the busyness of the season I hope you find time to be grateful, take time to care for yourself and each other, and remind yourself that you can’t do everything.  It’s ok to say no to some things so you can focus on your family, friends, and of course yourself.  Try to find balance this season so that it is life giving and not life depleting.

Ask yourself: what if we woke up today with only the things we thanked God for yesterday?

I’m afraid that I would be without many things this morning.  I’m afraid to say that I even would have woke up this morning without my health, my home, or even my family.  Thanksgiving is a perfect time to reset and practice gratitude in new ways.  You could begin ending cards to friends and family members.  If you don’t already, you could begin to pray throughout the day when you encounter something that reminds you of gratitude-just a simple thank you is enough.  “Thank you God for _________.”  A simple but effective prayer.

Yesterday we went to Colorado Springs to a trampoline park for the boys to jump around and while there someone hit the back rear of our pathfinder.  We have no idea who it was or when they did it but it was frustrating.  Jenna simply said- I just thank God it wasn’t worse.  She’s right of course.  We could have been hit driving or hit some ice and rolled over.   The fact we weren’t in the vehicle makes me feel a little better.  Doesn’t diminish the fact someone did that but focusing on the frustration wasn’t helpful.

I pray you all have a Happy Thanksgiving.  You are all in my prayers and part of what I am thankful for.
