Always Watching

James 3:13 NIV

“Who is wise and understanding among you?  Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.”

I have stayed up too late for the last several weeks watching the 2018 Winter Olympics.  I am assuming some of you have been doing the same.

I have witnessed incredible feats of athleticism, integrity, and of course humility.

And in the middle of that incredible sportsmanship I have also witnessed some not so proud moments for various athletes.  For example, some of you may have watched the medal ceremony where Jocelyne Larocque, a female Canadian hockey player who had lost to the US, removed her silver medal during the medal ceremony.

It was a sign of disrespect, not just to the Olympics, but also to the US who had fairly won the Gold medal.

That unfortunately shows the world a considerable deal about her values, respect for the sport, and in many ways, her approach to life and sense of entitlement.

As Christians, we too are often in the spotlight and sometimes do a similar thing.

We are being watched closely to see that our stated values and morals match the way we handle and engage the world.

The author of James, in our scripture reading today, is reminding us that our actions and deeds done through humility and integrity, those very important things we do when no one is watching, are those things that truly model a good and true life.

We do this daily in our families, our work lives, and in our groups outside of church.

We do this at our children and grandchildren’s sporting events.

We do this in line at the grocery store when there aren’t enough checkers and too many customers in line.

I hope this Lent you have committed to make more time for God.  We are able to do this in a variety of ways: fasting (giving up things that occupy space in our lives and distract us from God), adding in good deeds that help share God’s love with others, or even adding in helpful and meaningful spiritual practices we may be neglected such as intentional prayer and meditation, spending time with God’s word, and spending time in holy community.

I pray this Lent continues to be a season of renewal and of course renewed hope for you.
