Proverbs 3: 6 (MSG)
“Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track.”
Our bodies tell us when we are hungry, thirsty, and tired. Our bodies tell us when we need more social interaction and even less social interaction. Our bodies are constantly speaking to us and for the most part we listen to our bodies. Again, for the most part we eat, drink, rest, and retreat/recharge when needed.
What about when God is speaking to us? When the Holy Spirit is nudging us? Do we still listen and respond accordingly?
Many times, throughout my life I have suspected, and in some cases, knew, that God was speaking to me but intentionally didn’t listen. Become a pastor? I didn’t believe the timing was right or I didn’t believe that I was good enough or smart enough for what God was calling me to do. I understood God called many different types of people but it was so much easier to just push back on God.
Our scripture this morning reminds me that we need to not only trust God from the bottom of our hearts but to also listen to God’s voice in everything we do. God, Proverbs reminds us, will always keep us on track. If you think back on those times in your life where you had gone off track – were you listening to God? Ignoring God’s nudges?
Some of the ways we listen and hear God speaking to us is through prayer, fasting, spending time in scripture, and our other spiritual practices. And other times, God speaks to us through other people in our lives as well as our experiences.
I invite you to listen to those times and those spaces where God is speaking to you. Remember you don’t have to do everything on your own. Scripture tells us: If God is for us-who or what can be against us? We have the greatest advocate on our side. I invite you to listen to God and to give God your full and undivided Trust.
May it be so,
Rev. Lou Ward
