Blessed To Be A Blessing

Galatians 6:9

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

I have given out hundreds of my Matthew 25 bags since I began that particular ministry-from Pueblo to Trinidad and as far north as Denver and as far east as here in La Junta.

It takes work to go to the store and find good deals on things to put in the bags. Depending on the time of year it ranges from food and toiletries to food and warm weather gear, like hats and gloves.  It also costs money to help others with a ministry like this.

It takes work to put the blessing bags together-even when I get help from folks in the church.  It isn’t easy and is often time consuming.  You have to open packages and sort the food/goods and of course then stuff the sacks.

It also takes time to get out of my car and walk up to people who state they need help on a sign or even approach those who look like they might need help.  It takes time out of my day to talk to them and to pray with them should they accept.

To do all that work and attempted good-it breaks my heart when I give a Matthew 25 bag to a person and pray with them, only to drive by that same spot to see it discarded like trash because it seems like they only wanted money.

It would be easy to be discouraged, frustrated, or as our scripture warns today-weary.

Perseverance can often be difficult.

Have you ever helped out a neighbor or even a family member repeatedly and it seems as though they just don’t want to help themselves?

Perhaps you are in a season where you have stepped back from this church after many seasons of tireless and thankless work and dedication.

Have you ever noticed that doing good easily takes so much more effort than doing nothing?

For example, it is easy to let the phone go to voicemail of a friend who calls far too often to complain but much more difficult to answer the phone and listen patiently to the voice of frustration or despair on the other end.

It is far easier to ignore the needs of others rather than to take the time to see how you can be of assistance.

Our scripture today reminds us to be patient.  It reminds us to persevere in doing good.  We can’t do everything but we really should do something.

Our scripture reminds us today that doing good is a marathon and not a sprint-as Christians we should remind ourselves to be sure to pace ourselves accordingly.

I pray for all here in La Junta UMC who continue to bear the burden of ensuring this church continues to function at its greatest potential.

I also pray for those who are in a season of withdrawing and recharging-those who have stepped away- that you may allow both scripture and the Holy Spirit to renew your passion and hope for ensuring the success and mission of this Church.

I thank all of you who do so much to make this church great-both in front and behind the scenes!

You are all blessed to be a blessing.

God bless all of you!

May it be so,

Rev. Lou Ward
