Doing Good Deeds

Hebrews 13:16

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”

There is a bumper sticker that states: God doesn’t need your good works…but your neighbor does. In praying over our scripture reading today, honestly, I am not sure I entirely understand what sacrifice looks like.  Of course, I have sacrificed before but not to the degree to which some Christians have across the globe or even like the early Christians.

How often have I been walking into a store only to be confronted by someone asking for change-sticking my hands deep down in my pockets in a vain attempt to secure my pocket so as not to let my keys jingle the loose change I have-only to say “sorry I don’t have any change.”  We do this in many parts of our lives as well.

How often do we as Christians find ourselves in a position of having plenty; only to become hoarders rather than sharers?  We may do this with our resources, our time, and equally important- our love.

As Christians we are called by Jesus to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the sick and imprisoned.  We are also, according to Jesus in Matthew 25, commanded to welcome in the stranger.

What does that look like to welcome in the stranger?  To our homes?  To our church?  To our places of business?

In truth, I am always working on how to live out Matthew 25 as well as how to better welcome the stranger.

I pray that we as a church share our abundance with others.

I pray we continue to live out as a Matthew 25 church-as a church that lives into the commands of God not just in our resources and time but also with our love, hope, and faith.

May it be so,

Rev. Lou Ward
