A Thanksgiving Devotional

2 Corinthians 9:15

“Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!”

Thanksgiving week is one of my favorite times of year.  For starters I am absolutely in love with family dinners.  Each year, like many of you, our family gathers together for the Four F’s:  family, fellowship, food, and football.  I love turkey dinners with all the fixings but if truth be told I am really just in it for the gravy.  You see, everything on my plate is really just a vehicle for the many scoops of homemade turkey gravy.  I smother it all in it-my dad used to say how can you taste anything under all that gravy-I can’t!  That’s the point.  See, now I want some Turkey Gravy!

I love eating Thanksgiving dinner but I most enjoy spending time with our family.  We share stories, laugh until our cheeks hurt, and we thank God for each other.  Our Thanksgivings have evolved since having small children and I know they will continue to evolve as they grow up  and we grow older.  I hope you all have had family traditions that also bring you joy.  For some, however, I am aware that the holidays are a time of sadness.  I am praying for those in our church who have lost loved ones and learning to make new traditions while honoring and remembering the old.

Other than the Four F’s, thanksgiving has always been a time for me to reexamine ways that I am expressing my thankfulness.  I am able to ask myself how I am showing being grateful for all that I have including my church family and my family, our incredible freedoms we so often take for granted, and most importantly Christ’s sacrifice for me and you.  We have so much to be thankful for and Thanksgiving is a perfect time to slow down from the craziness and busyness of life to give our thanks back to God for all that we have.

I was reminded this week from Jenna that hospitals don’t close.  Several of our members were celebrating Thanksgiving immediately after church since several of them have to work on Thanksgiving Day.   I thank you for all that you do and sacrifice for our community.  I invite us to take a moment this week to pray and thank those that work in professions that require sacrifice and time away from family on these holidays.   I also invite each of us to pause this week and pray for our first responders, police, firemen and women, our state troopers, I ask you to also remember and pray for our men and women in uniform serving at home and abroad who, like those that serve our communities, are often required to work long hours and through holidays during the holiday season.

Let us most importantly also continue to pray for each other this holiday season.  Let us join together to lift up our friends and loved ones who are hurting this holiday season-let us be for them the body of Christ.

I pray that you are able to find time to spend time alone with God in prayer, scripture, meditation, and other spiritual practices that help connect you to our creator.

Finally, I pray you all have a blessed Thanksgiving, get renewed, and I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday.
